"Rural Health is the physical,
mental, emotional, spiritual, and social well-being of an individual
in a rural setting which permits optimal functioning of the mind,
body and spirit, including but not limited to, freedom from, or
adaptation to, disease, disability, pain or other abnormality" |
|
|
People living in rural areas have limited access to specialist
services in their local area as compared to their urban
counterparts. The shortage of qualified health care professionals in
these remote areas has an impact on the delivery of, access to,
quality health care services. The poor intercity
transport services, traffic, distances, low-income, low literacy and
lack of knowledge prevent the majority of people in rural belts from
reaching the city for the treatment of their health problems. Thus,
there is always an increasing need of establishing an integrated
network of Outpatient Clinics and Base Hospitals in the rural belts
to provide quality primary and secondary health care at an
affordable cost at their doorstep as well as to guide the patients
with major diseases to the tertiary care hospital in city.

RHOP-Rural Health
Outreach Programme |
|
 |
RHOP is being setup since April 2003 for achieving the above goals.
For many years, the Christian Medical College and Hospital, Ludhiana
has reached out to the wider community by providing health care and
education in urban and rural communities through clinics and medical
camps. But now this new initiative has started from CMC & H,
Ludhiana to provide a network of health services in the rural belts
around Ludhiana in |
|
|
conjunction
with Village Panchayats, Local Trusts and other Local Organizations.
Ludhiana is surrounded by a rural belt in a radius of more than 100
Km (62 miles), interspersed with small towns and villages. RHOP
services aim to address the problems caused by the social and
cultural barriers to health care of the individuals in rural belts
surrounding Ludhiana. Last year about 16
comprehensive medical care camps were organized besides the regular
monthly camp at Christu Jyoti Hospital, Amloh. A monthly Psychiatric
Clinic is also held at Missionaries of Charity, a home for mentally
challenged children. |
