Prosthodontics science is related to the restoration and maintenance of oral function, comfort, aesthetics and health of the patient by restoration of natural teeth and for replacement of missing teeth and craniofacial tissues.

The faculty and staff of the department of prosthodontics have worked hard over the 14 year history of Christian Dental College to build a reputation for excellence in education, service and research, in fulfillment and in support of the mission of Christian Medical College, Ludhiana. We have and are still enjoying a rich heritage of some of the most respected senior faculty members in the speciality of prosthodontics in this part of the country.

An undergraduate student is associated with this department right from his/her 1st year, where he/she is taught the basis of Dental Materials and their clinical importance. Preclinical laboratory exercise, starts from 1st yr which is continued till the end of the 2nd yr, of the undergraduate curriculum. This comprehensive labtrainingexists to enable students receive all the relevant information on the subject with respect to the practical aspects and the necessary psychomotor skills to perform steps related to clinical and lab procedures in the specialty of prosthodontics. Special emphasis is placed on occlusion, biomechanics and biological considerations of the oral cavity. Students gain knowledge and experience by fabricating a variety of extracoronal as well as full coverage restorations on simulated patient mannequins. They are taught systematic sequential procedures for the fabrication of complete and removable partial dentures with emphasis on biomechanical compatibilities. Foundation knowledge and techniques are taught by lectures and demonstrations that are correlated with student lab exercises.

3rd and 4th year students have opportunities to use and expand on the knowledge acquired in preclinical labs by treating patients in a clinical setting, developing fundamental, biologic and preventive principles with a progression to procedures that are more complex and restoring function, aesthetics and comfort of patients. The industrial city of Ludhiana, which is called the Manchester of India, by its sheer size of population provides a vast pool of patients to the students.
