However
it all began with Dr. William Virgin, a missionary General Surgeon from
Toronto, Canada, who had a special interest in Orthopaedics. Besides his
responsibility as a general surgeon, he took on himself the
responsibility of managing Orthopaedic patients. In 1954, Dr. Ronald J.
Garst from USA took over. To his credit goes the genesis of the
department, which we see today. He was appointed chairman of the
department in 1957. Besided being an innovative surgeon, he also took a
special interest in setting up and developing an artificial limb centre
in CMCH, which incidentally was also the first in North India. He helped
establish a school of physiotherapy and occupation therapy. Dr. Garst
also started post-graduate training programme in Orthopaedics in 1963.
To- date over one hundred post-graduates in Orthopaedics have passed the
portals of this institution.
In 1969, Dr. Lionel Henry Lobo took over as Professor and Chairman of
Orthopaedics. Under his dynamic leadership the department excelled in
every facet and achieved recognition as a centre of excellence in the
country. After his sudden demise in 1983, Dr. Ravinder Bhalla took over
and continued the work. He left in 1990. Punjab was then going through a
period of unrest and there were not many willing to continue the work in
Ludhiana. Under those trying circumstances Dr. M.K. Mam took over the
rebuilding of the department. Under his stewardship we have flourished
again and are back on rails. In between for four years from 1993 to
1997, Dr. Naresh Aggarwal took over and contributed. In 1997, Dr. Mam
was back and continued till 2004, when he handed over the reigns to Dr.
Bobby John, the present incumbent.
