Peripheral blood Allogeneic stem cell transplant:
Christian Medical College, Ludhiana performed its first successful
allogeneic bone marrow (stem cell) transplant in October 2008 on a 33 yr
old man with philiadelphia chromosome positive acute lymphoblastic
leukemia. It was a peripheral blood stem cell transplant and his brother
was his donor. This is the first successful allogeneic stem cell
transplant in Punjab. |

Autologous stem cell transplant: CMC’s
first autologous stem cell transplant was done in May 2009 on 55 yr old
man with Mutiple myeloma. It was a peripheral blood stem cell transplant
where stem cells are collected from the cubital vein. |

Thalassamia transplant: CMC has done
its first Thalassaemia transplant in February 2009 on a 14 yr old girl
with Thalassaemia major. This happens to be the first successful
Thalassaemia transplant north of New Delhi. CMC, Ludhiana is the only
centre doing paediatric transplants in Northern India. |

WAS transplant : There have been only 4 allogeneic stem cell transplants done for Wiskott Aldrich Syndrome in
India. This the first time a parent to son transplant with one antigen
mismatch has been done (July 2009).. His father was the donor and bone
marrow was collected in the operation theatre from his iliac crest under
general anesthesia. The 1 ½ yr old boy weighing 10 Kgs has completed 100
days. |

CMC has so far done 9 stem cell transplants till
November 2009. (for Acute lymphoblastic leukemia,
thalassaemia, Aplastic anemia, multiple myeloma and Wiskott Aldrich
Syndrome) |

Elective haemophilia surgery: As factor
assay facility was established in the haemato-pathology coagulation lab,
CMC was able to perform its first elective herniorrhaphy and
haematocoele excision on a 25 yr old male. This has embarked a new era
in establishing full-fledged coagulation lab and we could be a centre
for evaluation and management of all bleeding diathesis, for the
patients north of New Delhi. |

Grant from Babha Atomic Research Centre (BARC):
CMC received Rs. 24.5 lakhs grant from Department of Atomic Energy, BARC
to establish blood irradiation facility, as we are recognized as a
referral centre for transplants in northern India. This would be
extremely useful for patients undergoing transplants, patients on
immunosuppressive therapy, neonates and patients on anticancer
chemotherapy drugs. |
