Our Founders |
 |
1874 was the year
of great significance for Ludhiana in Punjab, and India, when the two
Greenfield sisters in Scotland envisioned the contribution of women (as
nurses) in the field of health care and education. ‘Medical Mission
Work’ was initiated in 1881 by Miss Martha Rose & Kay Greenfield, two
sisters, one of them a nurse who took a room in Chaura Bazaar in
Ludhiana for a dispensary where ‘She could give simple treatment and
advise to women patients’. Later, supported |

|
by the prayers and
good wishes handful of women as well as their educationist and
philanthropist brother, they converted an abandoned Church into a small
hospital. It was here in 1889 the school of Nursing came into being. In
response to the Divine Mission that our founders received from the Lord
Almighty, Kay and Rose Greenfield started teaching the basics of Primary
Health Care to the Christian girls. Slowly extensions were added in the
original building and it was called ‘Memorial Hospital’ in the memory of
Kay. In 1891 Miss Rose Greenfield was thrilled to invite Dr. Edith Brown
as the first doctor to her hospital and inspired by her organization the
‘Womens’ Medical School, the first in Asia, Ludhiana Zenana Hospital was
attached to the medical school and nursing as well as medical training
was given only to the Christian girls who would take care of Purdah Clad
women patients. From 1901 onwards more systematic training was given to
nurses. Names of Miss Henderson and Miss Mason (Nursing superintendent
in 1919). Needs mention for raising the standards of training to a very
high level. Soon, licensing of nurses was started by the Punjab nurses
and Midwives Registration Council as nursing training became a regular
three year course, gradually acquiring a systematic training program and
very soon flourished to become one of the fountain heads of nursing and
midwifery training (GNM) in North India.
College of Nursing was established in 1973 with four years degree
program. It was affiliated to the Punjab University. In 1987 M.Sc
Nursing in Psychiatric and Maternal Child Health Nursing was started. At
present College is offering M.Sc. in six specialists. Nursing education
at Christian Medical College and Hospital, Ludhiana was initiated with
the vision of sending out of its portals young women (and men) who would
not only be excelling professionally but also be socially relevant and
spiritually alive. They would be total persons with the right
combination of academic excellence, personality development and
spiritual values.
The Mission of our founders as handed down and passed on to the next
generation of leaders has been:

and serving those in need through the noble and care – focused

those subjected to their care). |
