Pathology Department
is teaching the undergraduates of MBBS, BDS, B.Sc. nursing, BMLT &DMLT
students. We have regular MD Programme going. So far 48 MD
candidates have passed out. Our postgraduates are working in India
and overseas and are doing well in their fields. Many research
papers and thesis have been done. We have arranged regional
conferences NW Chapter IAPM in the year 1984 & 2000. Dr. Barbara
Bain from Royal College of Pathologists, London has held workshops
on Heamatology cases.

Post Graduate
Teaching - Every Tuesday evening P.G seminar is held at Pathology and our P.G students are given
hands-down instructions on Histopathology, Haematology, Cytology and
Blood Banking, Jourans and Recent Advance topics are covered.
Sometimes on Thursday evening, slide discussions on interesting
cases are taken for post graduate by Senior Pathology

the level of Professor from time to time.
Undergraduate
Teaching
We will be completing our syllabus
for Second Prof. MBBS students by 31st Aug 2k after which we will be
conducting revision vivas every week of General Pathology,
Systematic Pathology and Haematology. This will enable this IInd
Prof. students to know the subject better for the exam and for
further studies.
Immunohistochemistry- ER-PR study
for Carcinoma Breast has been started. We are in the process of
starting Lymphoma Panel. Dr. Nalini Calton, (Professor), Dr. Kanwal
Masih (Professor) and Dr. Roma Isaacs went to All India Institute of
Medical Sciences, New Delhi under Indian National Science Academy
scholarship to learn techniques in Immunohistochemistry in
Neuropathology which included immunohistochemical stains viz GFAP,
S-100, LCA(CD 45), CD 20, CK, EGF, synaptophsin, Chromogranin, MIB,
p.53 for brain tumours, IHC and enzyme histochemistry for muscle
biopsies and special stain for nerve biopsies.
School of DMLT
: The name of the course is
"Diploma in Med. Lab Technology" affiliated to Christian Medical
Association of India. The basic minimum education requirements for
admission of the course is 10+2 or equivalent with science subjects.
Number of sears recognized by the Laboratory training committee of CMAI are six. This is two years course with six months compulsory
internship.
Staff Pattern
& teaching programme
: There are
four recognised tutors. The subjects covered include General Lab
technique, Anatomy, Physiology, Haematology, Biochemistry,
Microbiology including serology and parasitology, Histopathology,
Cytology, Urinalysis demonstration and practical classes.
Future Plans
& Projections : Dr. R.P Britt
visiting consultant from U.K is helping us in monitoring Quality
Control and anticoagulation therapy in Cardiac patients. D-Dimer
test for DIC patients has been started since 1997 is attracting
referral cases from neighbouring hospitals as the test is highly
sensitive. We have been doing monoclonal antibody study in Acute
Leukaemia and are keen to expand this area of work. Heamophilia
Federation India is keen to associate with us in starting a special
weekly clinic. Immunohistochemistry (ER, PR) work has been started
since April 2K. 20 cases have already been worked up with excellent
results. Lymphoma panel will be started shortly.

IAPM NW Conference was organised by our department.120 delegates attended
from all over Punjab, Himachal & Haryana. The guest lecture was
delivered by Prof. S. Panda (AIIMS) on Hepatic E. virus. He was the
first to isolate this virus in India. We had a good Symposium on
Nephropathology and FNAC on Kidney lesions. Another session on Pure
Red Cell Aplasia (P.R.C.A) a rare form of anaemia. C.M.C Ludhiana
has the largest number of P.R.C.A recorded cases (60) over 16 year
study period.
All our senior and
junior faculty took turns in attending Regional and National
Conference & workshop.
