Hello, I’m Dr. Vijay Kumar Chaudhary. I completed my DM in Clinical Haematology at Christian Medical College, Ludhiana (May 2022 to April 2025).
Choosing Haematology was both a challenging and rewarding decision for me. Training at CMC Ludhiana made this smooth and deeply fulfilling.
One of the most striking aspects of the program is the perfect balance between independence and guidance. From the early days, especially in the OPD, we are encouraged to take clinical decisions on our own. These decisions are then carefully reviewed and refined by our Head of Department, which greatly enhances both confidence and clinical reasoning.
The academic structure is very strong and consistent. Daily teaching sessions, weekly academic discussions, and journal clubs ensure continuous learning. We also have regular masterclasses featuring eminent Haematologists, which provide valuable insights and inspiration.
The clinical exposure here is extensive. We encounter a wide variety of cases, ranging from common conditions to rare and complex disorders, across both benign and malignant Haematology in adults as well as children. This diverse exposure significantly strengthens our clinical competence.
The department fosters a collaborative and inclusive environment. Weekly team meetings involving faculty, residents, and support staff create a platform to address challenges and improve patient care collectively, promoting a strong sense of teamwork.
Transplant training is comprehensive, with hands-on exposure to various types of bone marrow transplants and active involvement in stem cell procedures. Laboratory training is equally robust, covering peripheral smear examination, flow cytometry, coagulation studies, and blood banking.
We also gain significant procedural experience, including bone marrow aspiration and biopsy, intrathecal chemotherapy, and central line insertions. The daycare services further enhance our understanding of chemotherapy preparation and administration.
Hemophilia care is another important area of exposure, with a multidisciplinary approach that provides holistic patient management.
In addition to clinical and academic training, there are ample opportunities for research, conference participation, and academic presentations, which help in overall professional development.
I would like to especially acknowledge our Head of Department, Dr. Joseph John, whose mentorship has been invaluable. His supportive and encouraging approach creates a learning environment where we can grow confidently, think independently, and continuously improve.
Beyond academics, the department shares a strong sense of camaraderie, with regular informal gatherings and activities that strengthen bonds and create a supportive atmosphere.
This training has not only shaped me as a clinician but has also influenced the way I approach challenges, decision-making, and teamwork.
