About Us

The Department of Respiratory Medicine at Christian Medical College & Hospital, Ludhiana is dedicated to the diagnosis, treatment, and long-term management of a wide range of respiratory disorders. Our team provides expert care to patients suffering from asthma, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD), Tuberculosis (TB), sleep-related breathing disorders, pleural diseases and other complex respiratory conditions.

Clinical Services

We offer both outpatient and inpatient services with a focus on early diagnosis and individualized treatment plans for a variety of respiratory conditions. Services include:

  • Management of chronic respiratory diseases such as asthma and COPD
  • Diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis and other pulmonary infections
  • Evaluation and care for Interstitial Lung Diseases
  • Allergy evaluation and management
  • Pulmonary care in neuromuscular diseases
  • Preoperative pulmonary risk assessment
  • Respiratory support for critically ill patients
  • Diagnosis and management of Sleep related disorders like Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Procedures and Diagnostic Facilities

Bronchoscopy

The department offers flexible bronchoscopy services for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes, including:

Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL)

Endobronchial biopsy

Airway assessment in suspected malignancies or infections

Performed in a dedicated suite with experienced staff, this procedure enables real-time visualization of the airway and precise tissue sampling.

Pulmonary Function Testing (PFT)

We provide spirometry services for assessment of lung function in obstructive and restrictive lung diseases.

  • Essential in the diagnosis and monitoring of asthma, COPD, and ILD
  • Preoperative pulmonary assessment
  • Baseline and follow-up testing in neuromuscular and chronic respiratory illnesses

Upcoming and Expanding Services

The department is actively working to expand its range of diagnostic and therapeutic services, which will soon include:

  • Allergy testing (Skin Prick Test)
  • Exhaled Nitric Oxide (FeNO) testing for airway inflammation
  • Diffusing Capacity for Carbon Monoxide (DLCO) testing
  • Endobronchial Ultrasound (EBUS)-guided biopsy

Interdepartmental Collaboration

The Department of Respiratory Medicine works closely with:

  • Haematology and Oncology for evaluation of GVHD, pulmonary clearance before transplant, and opportunistic infections
  • Neurology for pulmonary care in neuromuscular disorders
  • Critical Care and Anaesthesiology for ventilatory support and bronchoscopic assistance in ICU settings
  • Department of Cardiology and Nephrology for ruling out pulmonary disorders in chronic patients
