Dr. Ketan Modak

Coming from a background in MD Internal Medicine, choosing haematology was a journey of rediscovery for me

My name is Dr. Ketan Modak from Nagpur, and I had the privilege of doing DM in Clinical Haematology at Christian Medical College, Ludhiana, from 2019 to 2022.

One of the most distinctive aspects of the department is that the environment truly feels like a family, where residents receive personalized attention, strong mentorship, and constant encouragement to grow both professionally and personally.

The training offers excellent clinical exposure across the full spectrum of Haematology — including both malignant and non-malignant disorders, along with extensive experience in bone marrow transplantation. What particularly sets the program apart is the participation in planning and managing bone marrow transplants from the very first day. This level of exposure throughout all three years is something that is rarely seen in most DM programs.

Academics are held twice a week in a very friendly and interactive atmosphere. The focus is not just on teaching facts but on developing clinical thinking and reasoning, without the intimidation that sometimes accompanies academic discussions.

A special mention must go to our Head of Department and mentor, Dr. Joseph. He is truly a gem — not only an outstanding clinician but also an exceptional human being who inspires and guides trainees with great patience and wisdom.

I must mention here about the excellent support we got during our residency from hard working nursing in charge and entire nursing staff, well trained physician assistants and the departmental administrative staff.

During these three years, you will undoubtedly learn Haematology through thousands of hours of clinical practice. However, what the department truly teaches you is the “right approach toward patients and toward the discipline of Haematology itself”.

Residents are given significant responsibility in patient care. Our opinions are valued, and we are encouraged to think independently and take ownership of clinical decisions. With a substantial patient load, participation in major conferences and meetings, and constant encouragement to grow, the department provides a comprehensive platform for both academic and professional development.

If I had to summarize what the Department of Clinical Haematology at CMC Ludhiana gave me in one word, it would be “confidence” – to step out and practice independently in the real world.

I would wholeheartedly recommend this program to anyone who wishes to train in a place that offers excellent professional learning within an environment that truly feels like a family!
